Michelle F. Caldwell, 50, of Gardnersville, KY, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at her home. Born in Kenton County, KY on August 20, 1962, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Joe and Pearl Catherine Richie Yoakum. On October 4, 1980, she married Christopher Jay Caldwell, and her dear husband survives her passing. A 1980 graduate of Pendleton High School, Michelle received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cincinnati Bible College in 2000 and her Master’s Degree in School Social Work from the University of Kentucky in 2007. She was employed by Pendleton County Schools, where she was a counselor at Northern Elementary in Butler. She enjoyed serving the Lord at Grassy Creek Christian Church. There she served as Worship Leader, Choir and Drama Director, Sunday School teacher, and Ladies Softball coach.
Michelle felt blessed to have received numerous accolades in her life, including being named as a Kentucky Colonel in 1983 by Governor Martha Lane Collins, serving as Mid-West representative for the Kentucky Board of School Social Workers, and receiving the Pendleton County Outstanding Citizen Award in 2012 from the Pendleton County Chamber of Commerce. Michelle felt grateful to have served Pendleton County in various ways: She was a Pendleton County bus driver for 7 years, a family advocate for the resource center, a case management worker for Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Pendleton County, an active advocate with Pendleton County’s Relay for Life, a charter member of the Pendleton County Alumni Band, and a charter member of the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Dragon Boat Team.
At the age of 37, Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer. Seven years later she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. For 13 years, she battled the effects of this disease while making a difference in the lives of her family, her students, her friends, her community, and beyond. Through all of her trials, she was optimistic, giving all of the credit to her faith, family, and friends. She was a true inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her husband of 32 years, Jay, she is survived by her daughter, Lindsey (Nick) Wright and her son, Adam (Brittany) Caldwell, both of Gardnersville; her granddaughter, Emelia “Eme” Michelle Wright; her brother, Michael Joe Yoakum and her sister, Elisha Yoakum Carr, both of Falmouth; several nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the Grassy Creek Christian Church, DeMossville, with Bro. Mike Flynn officiating. The visitation will be from 2-8:00 p.m. on Saturday at her church. Interment will take place in the Gardnersville Cemetery, Pendleton County.
